THE BUNBURY COMPANY, INC.

The Bunbury Company is pleased to present a profile summary of our grant making during 2008. This includes a complete list of grants made as part of our quarterly review process, a snapshot of our financial statement as of December 31, 2008, and a composite of images and interviews with 9 of our grantees from that year.

Highlights of our grant making include the following:

  • 46 organizations were granted awards totaling $996,000
  • The average grant made was $21,600, the high $250,000 and the low $5,000
  • 1% of those funded were first time grantees
  • 81% were organizations or programs located in Mercer County
  • Approximately 54% of the allocated funds will support programs aimed at disadvantaged youth and families, 30% for education, 10% for the environment, and 6% for the arts
  • Additionally, Bunbury provided a total of $328,500 for 36 grants in Vermont through its sister foundation, The Windham Foundation

We value the opportunity we have at Bunbury to provide needed funds to those who are working on significant projects in our region. We hope this information is helpful to you as potential grantees in 2009/2010.

2008 Grant Awards
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer County $15,000
This grant will support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer’s ongoing efforts to increase the quantity and quality of their Big/Little matches and continue to seek out and secure new corporate partnerships.
   
Boys and Girls Club of Trenton   Mercer County $20,000
This grant will provide continued support to this organization as they expand their offerings into additional schools and congregations in the greater Trenton area. Boys and Girls Club of Trenton/Mercer is currently the largest provider of after school programs in the City of Trenton.
   
Center for Educational Advancement $15,000
This operating grant will provide continuing support to this organization which provides jobs, education, job readiness, and support for people with disabilities.
   
Community Action Service Center, Inc. $10,000
The summer academic enrichment program serves a growing latino community and offers comprehensive family support and counseling services year-round. This grant will fund staff salaries for this program which is designed to promote children’s future success in life through summer academic support and social skills development.
   
Community Hope, Inc. $10,000
This grant supports the opening of the new wing of a residential facility which has the capacity to serve 95 former servicemen and women and provide living quarters for another 25 veterans.
   
Conservation Resources, Inc. $15,000
This grant will provide operating funds to support the Raritan-Piedmont Wildlife Habitat Partnership's efforts to implement the Grassland Conservation Plan in Somerset and Hunterdon Counties.
   
Family and Children's Services of Central NJ, Inc. $15,000
The Family Child Home Program, Embracing Families project is a 0-3 initiative aimed at increasing reading and language skills in non-English speaking households. This organization works with families in their homes on a weekly basis over a 12-month period.
   
Family Guidance Center Corporation $10,000
This operating grant will help to fund the Children’s Day Treatment Program. This program has an enrollment of approximately 80 children and there is a waiting list for services. Family Guidance is seeking to maintain current service levels and provide transportation services for all children who attend the program.
   
Food Bank of South Jersey $20,000
The Kids Café Program will provide wholesome, nutritious food to 100 disadvantaged children in Camden City, New Jersey.
   
George Street Playhouse $10,000
This grant will support education and outreach programs at the theatre. These programs help to bring theatre arts into less-advantaged school districts as well as providing opportunities for the children to see works at the theatre.
   
Historic Morven, Inc. $10,000
This grant will support Morven’s Exhibition, “Princeton 1783. The Nation’s Capital”. This is a collaborative project involving cultural, academic and historic preservation organizations across the state.
   
HiTops, Inc. $10,000
This organization provides wellness care and health education for teens in the greater Princeton area. HiTops offers peer-based education, a sliding fee clinic, and outreach for the community's growing Latina population. A grant of $10,000 will help to educate young Latina girls on reproductive and preventive healthcare, focusing on HIV education, pregnancy prevention, and other health issues that affect young Latinas disproportionately and to create a peer support system.
   
HomeFront, Inc. $20,000
This operating grant will help HomeFront, Inc. to maintain its infrastructure while it establishes critical ancillary services to existing programs, or initiate new programs, while working to secure permanent funding for these areas.
   
Housing   Community Development Network of NJ $20,000
This grant will support community-based education and advocacy networks in our region. Housing and Community Development Network provides ongoing advocacy support and education to smaller non-profit housing and community development organizations across the state.
   
Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance $15,000
This operating grant will support the alliance's land preservation and stewardship programs, particularly efforts to protect critical farmland and natural areas from development and create greenbelts of preserved land in high quality watersheds of the county.
   
Isles $100,000
A capital grant to Isles will help this organization to broaden its reach in central New Jersey, consolidate and increase the effectiveness of their existing operations, recharge a deteriorating community bordering Trenton, and create a demonstration project that integrates green design, substantial employment, and healthy spaces for living and working.
   
LifeTies, Inc. $10,000
This operating grant will support the continued services of a grant writer and expand psychiatric services to adolescents.
   
McCarter Theatre $20,000
This operating grant will help to fund programs at this regional theatre company based in Mercer County.
   
Medical Center at Princeton Foundation, Inc. $250,000
This capital fund grant will help to support the relocation of the University Medical Center at Princeton.
   
Mercer Street Friends $20,000
Funds from this grant will be used to complete the second phase of an upgrade to the telephone system which will dramatically improve important communication between the employees and the people served by this organization.
   
Midland School $11,000
This grant will help to upgrade the computer lab at the school which serves individuals with disabilities from elementary age into adulthood.
   
NAMI-Mercer, New Jersey $10,000
Operating support for the Helpline will allow this organization to expand its marketing activities so that more people will be aware of services available to families affected by mental illness. A resource guide of mental health services in Mercer County will be produced and made available to NAMI members and the general public.
   
New Jersey Conservation Foundation $20,000
This grant supports a statewide easement stewardship and defense initiative which will help with the monitoring of conservation easements across the state.
   
New Jersey Future $15,000
This grant is given to support continued efforts to reduce sprawl and encourage smart growth on the ground in New Jersey by developing more practical means to implement the vision of the State Plan.
   
New Jersey Highlands Coalition $10,000
An operating grant to this organization will help to support a preservation initiative in this environmentally sensitive and threatened region of the state.
   
New Jersey SEEDS $10,000
An operating grant is recommended for this Newark-based organization for its work helping disadvantaged high school students gain the benefit of private school education through it’s Scholars Program.
   
Passage Theatre Company $15,000
Funds from this grant will support the State Street Project, a key after school program in the city of Trenton. The program offers writing, acting and production skills to youth as an artistic outlet for dealing with the issues they face in urban life including gang violence, single parent homes and drug abuse.
   
People and Stories – Gente y Cuentos $25,000
This grant is given to support capacity building in the areas of project management, grant writing, and office administration. People and Stories is a unique organization that uses literature to enhance the lives of people from all walks of life as they share their collective experiences.
   
Pinelands Preservation Alliance $10,000
This operating grant will help to support two vitally important regional conservation issues: stewardship of conserved areas and protection of Pine Barrens water quality.
   
Princeton Public Library $5,000
Project support for the Latino Initiatives project will help to provide increasing literacy programming for Princeton’s growing Latino community.
   
Princeton Symphony Orchestra $5,000
Operating support is continued for this Princeton performing arts organization which, in addition to its regular concert series, provides free concerts for students attending area elementary schools.
   
Princeton Young Achievers $20,000
This operating grant is given to support educational after-school programs for children from low income families living in the Princeton area.
   
Rescue Mission of Trenton $10,000
The E-initiative Program provides work training and experience to many of the program's homeless men and women. This program is a part of the mission's store which rehabs and resells donated items to support its programs.
   
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton $15,000
This hospital-based program will concentrate on reaching the Trenton community with preventative care and education regarding childhood obesity. Middle-school girls are the focus of this current effort.
   
Symphony in C $10,000
This operating grant will support the Music Matters educational program with an emphasis on increasing and strengthening programs in the city of Camden.
   
Thomas Edison State College $10,000
Operating support for Leadership Trenton will provide support while allowing the program to build on its success and expand through increased outreach to the community.
   
Trent House Association $15,000
Project support for the William Trent house will help to provide reproduction period furniture for this important historical landmark.
   
Trenton Community Music School $5,000
A general operating grant to the school will help to provide financial aid to underserved residents of the greater Trenton area who will benefit from their programs.
   
Trenton Education Dance Institute $20,000
This grant will help to sustain TEDI's core program, Creative Classrooms, at its two newest schools, Caroll Robbins and Woodrow Wilson and its expanded programming for parent involvement launched during 2007.
   
Trinity Counseling Service $30,000
The Childhood Intervention Initiative is a collaborative effort of Trinity Counseling Service, Princeton Nursery school and Princeton Regional Schools to identify at-risk children as they transition through the public school system. The purpose of the program is to help children to reach their fullest potential in a safe and nurturing environment.
   
Two River Theatre Company $10,000
This operating grant will support the 732 project, an oral history project focusing on individuals from all walks of life who live and work in the 732 area code. The resulting artistic collaboration will be viewed by an audience consisting of the participants and the greater community in an attempt to stimulate dialogue and bring embedded social issues to the surface of conversation.
   
Upper Raritan Watershed Association $20,000
This grant supports a partnership project focusing on integrated invasive plant species management. The project represents the State’s first comprehensive effort toward invasive species management using a methodology of early detection/rapid response, coupled with strategic management planning and public outreach in the Hopewell Valley and Upper Raritan Watershed regions.
   
Visiting Nurse Association of Mercer County $25,000
The Electronic Data Warehouse is a quality improvement tool which will allow for more comprehensive clinical data analysis.
   
Women Helping Women $20,000
General operating support will allow this organization to continue to provide services to women and girls in the community with an emphasis on taking control of their lives and living up to their potential.
   
Young Scholars’ Institute $25,000
General operating support will help to provide Trenton youth with tutoring and educational programs as well as small-group guidance in college preparation, including visiting tours to colleges outside of New Jersey.
   
YWCA of Trenton $10,000
The YWCA of Trenton's Ready, Set, Grow program is a leadership program for underserved youth in Trenton.
