THE BUNBURY COMPANY, INC.

The Bunbury Company is pleased to present a profile summary of our grant making during 2006. This includes a complete list of grants made as part of our quarterly review process, a snapshot of our financial statement as of December 31, 2006, and a composite of images and interviews with nine of our grantees from that year.

Highlights of our grantmaking include the following:

  • 46 organizations were granted awards totaling $604,000
  • The average grant made was $13,130, the high $75,000 and the low $5,000
  • 17% of those funded were 1st time grantees
  • 66% were organizations or programs located in Mercer County
  • Approximately 40% of the allocated funds will support programs aimed at disadvantaged youth and families, 37% for education, 11% for the environment, and 11% for the arts.
  • Additionally, Bunbury provided a total of $274,000 for 36 grants in Vermont through its sister foundation, The Windham Foundation.

We value the opportunity we have at Bunbury to provide needed funds to those who are working on significant projects in our region. We hope this information is helpful to you as potential grantees in 2007.

2006 Grants

Artistic Realization Technologies $10,000

A.R.T. is dedicated to bringing uncompromised creative control to those who lack articulate means of self-expression. A.R.T. has developed remarkable new technologies that empower physically challenged people to create paintings, music, sculpture and photography. This operating grant will help to support current programming.

 
   
Aslan Youth Ministries $5,000

The enrichment programs offered to Aslan’s Right Choices class participants include cycling/touring, summer camping, Creation Music Festival, Camp Lebanon, summer day camps and back to school clothing and holiday gift program.

 
   
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer County $20,000
over two years
This operating grant will support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer County's ongoing efforts to dramatically increase the number of adult mentors to the children of Mercer County who want and need the companionship of a caring and committed adult.  
   
Boys and Girls Club of Trenton & Mercer County $15,000
This operating grant will support the Boys and Girls Club of Trenton and Mercer County as they fill a need in the City of Trenton, New Jersey, by providing safe alternatives to children after school and during the summer. The current program will include outreach into five school satellite locations.  
   
Cathedral Kitchen $50,000
This two-year grant will help to cover construction costs for a new building: “A Home for the Cathedral Kitchen”.  
   
Committee on Religious Ministries $10,000
This operating grant will support the Chaplaincy Department of Princeton Healthcare System. The mission of the Chaplaincy Department is to attend to spiritual and religious concerns and to offer comfort and support to the patients, families of patients, staff and physicians of the Princeton Healthcare System.  
   
Community Action Service Center, Inc. $10,000
The Summer Academic Enrichment Program is designed to strengthen and maintain the academic and social skills of 100 economically disadvantaged children of diverse backgrounds. The current grant will fund staff salaries for the program.  
   
Community Arts Partnership at the Peddie School $5,000
This grant will provide general operating support for this cultural arts center located in Hightstown, New Jersey. CAPPS offers a variety of programs in the arts, presenting internationally renowned artists at affordable prices.  
   
Crawford House $15,000
This grant will help to support Crawford House’s annual program operating expenses as a treatment and life skills center for 22 women making the transition from drug and alcohol dependency.  
   
Crisis Ministry of Princeton and Trenton $7,500
This grant will provide general operating support to two direct aid programs; food and financial assistance. These direct aid programs impact the lives of approximately 1,400 families in Mercer County each month by providing food or monetary support for rent, security deposits, utilities or prescription medications to low income individuals and families.  
   
Family and Community Services of Somerset County $5,000
The Hispanic individual and family mental health clinician’s full-time salary will be subsidized through this grant.  
   
Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties $5,000
The onsite Culinary Training Program helps adults become self-sufficient by providing training in the skills they need to obtain permanent, better-paid jobs. The 13-week program is taught by a certified executive chef and includes daily food preparation for 100 children at a local tutoring program, classroom lecture, one week of job-shadowing at a local food establishment, and the opportunity to receive ServSafe and NJ Food Handlers Certification.  
   
George Street Playhouse $7,000
Support from Bunbury will allow the Arts Education Program to continue providing New Jersey youth with affordable, quality arts experiences.  
   
Historic Morven, Inc. $25,000
The Changing Exhibition Program for 2007-2008 will be viewed by the general public as well as local students.  
   
Historical Society of Princeton $75,000
over three years
Capital support will aid in the renovation of the Updike Farmstead which will become the Historical Society of Princeton’s new headquarters. The Updike Farmstead, which was purchased last year by the Historical Society of Princeton, is located on Quaker Road and is one of the last farmsteads in Princeton. The farm, part of the 17th century Stony Brook settlement, was cultivated primarily by two families – the Updikes and the descendants of Benjamin Clarke.  
   
HITOPS, Inc. $25,000
The Latino Outreach program will help HiTops improve their facilities so that they can effectively reach out to a larger number of adolescents and provide an enhanced array of services, placing special emphasis on Latino youth and their families.  
   
HomeSharing Program of Somerset County $5,000
This operating grant will help to prevent homelessness by increasing the number of matches by 10% during 2007 and enhancing services which enable clients to maintain their independence.  
   
Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance $12,000
GIS map generation equipment will be purchased to assist in prioritizing preservation projects, monitoring preserved land, and creating trail maps. Maps will also be used to build public awareness of conservation issues and opportunities.  
   
Institute for Women’s Leadership $20,000
The Institute will fund internship placements and social action projects for undergraduate Rutgers students to learn about leadership and public policy as well as successful programs and strategies to address challenges facing underserved populations in New Jersey.  
   
Isles $20,000
Operating support will help to strengthen Isles’ capacity to address the needs of economically disadvantaged youth and their families through integrated community development, environmental programming, job training, and regional organizing.  
   
Kean University Foundation $20,000
Operating funds will help to support a program to train day care managers and get more facilities under accreditation.  
   
LifeTies, Inc. $10,000
This operating grant will help to provide increased professional services for adolescents residing in two group homes.  
   
Midland School $25,000
Capital support will aid in the construction of a 31,000 square foot addition to the school that will house creative and performing arts as well as physical education programs.  
   
Mount Carmel Guild $10,000
Mount Carmel Guild seeks to enhance the lives of those in need: body, mind and spirit. This operating grant will support the Emergency Assistance/Food Pantry and Home Health Nursing programs.  
   
NAMI-Mercer, New Jersey $15,000
The Visions For Tomorrow program is designed for parents and caregivers of children who have been diagnosed with mental illness/brain disorders. The course was designed and written jointly by family members and professionals.  
   
New Jersey Conservation Foundation $20,000
This grant will provide general operating support for land conservation projects.  
   
Open Space Institute $20,000
This grant will support the New Jersey Conservation Loan Fund which provides bridge financing to land conservation projects in the Garden State when acquisition costs are not readily available.  
   
Passage Theatre Company $10,000
Funds will support the State Street Project which is Passage Theatre Company’s arts mentoring program for kids ages 8-18 in Trenton, New Jersey. The program brings kids increasing opportunities to realize their self worth and the diversity of their imagination through experiences in playwriting, poetry, performance, vocational training in technical theatre, and increased exposure to the performing arts.  
   
People and Stories - Gente y Cuentos $50,000
over two years
People and Stories will conduct a total of eight programs with two collaborating Trenton sites that serve at-risk youth and economically disadvantaged mothers enrolled in GED and ESL courses at Youth Corps of Trenton and Latinas Unidas. In addition, this operating grant will be used to build organizational infrastructure to sustain the current level of organizational growth.  
   
Perkins Center for the Arts $15,000
Perkins Center will broaden in-school and after-school arts education programs in southern New Jersey schools and communities, create employment opportunities in the arts for teens and present four community concerts/exhibitions.  
   
Princeton Young Achievers $20,000
This two-year operating grant will fund after-school youth development and educational programs.  
   
Raritan Valley Community College $10,000
Through the Lens is a collaborative effort between Raritan Valley Community College and the Edna Mahon Correctional Facility for Women in Clinton, New Jersey. This project involves inmates at the correctional facility in producing a video of their stories as a way to reach at-risk teens.  
   
Sikora Center, Inc. $25,000
This two-year grant will help to provide substance abuse programming to economically disadvantaged men aged 25 years and older with a history of co-occurring mental health disorders who are ineligible for public funding.
 
   
Teach For America $5,000
The mission of Teach For America is to provide New Jersey's most disadvantaged students with excellent teachers who go beyond traditional expectations to ensure that their students achieve academically. This operating grant will fund the recruitment, training, and on-going support of our corps members in Camden.
 
   
Trenton Area Soup Kitchen $10,000
This grant will help with the purchase and/or renovation of a van which is the linchpin of the food collection effort for this organization.
 
   
Trenton Children's Chorus $10,000
This operating grant will sustain for a second year the Thursday afternoon program that serves 18 new enrollees in the Training Choir and twenty-five children in the intermediate choir. Trenton Children's Chorus provides children with the chance to sing a wide range of choral literature, especially those who might otherwise not have the opportunity.
 
   
Trenton Community Music School $7,500
This operating grant will help to defray the general operating costs of the school and to provide tuition assistance to students in need.  
   
Trenton Education Dance Institute $40,000
General operating support would fund the core of Trenton Education Dance Institute’s programming which is Creative Classrooms. The program consists of weekly classes for approximately 150 5th grade students including those with special needs from early October through May.  
   
Trust for Public Land $15,000

This operating grant will support land acquisition in Camden, Ocean and Monmouth counties and park development efforts in the City of Camden.

 
   
Women’s Crisis Services $10,000
Individuals affected by domestic violence and sexual assault receive free supportive services to assist them in coping with trauma.  
   
Women Helping Women $20,000
The Strong Girls Teen Program is designed to help young girls as they deal with issues of peer pressure, body image, bullying and sexual health.  
   
Women in Learning and Leadership $20,000
Operating support will allow the W.I.L.L. program to continue to implement, develop and sustain projects designed to enhance women’s leadership.
